Sudbury Emergency Group Holds Violence Prevention Course at Goodnow; Open to Public
On Sunday, January 27th from 2-4PM there will be a violence-prevention course at the Goodnow Library (21 Concord Rd, Sudbury), sponsored by the Medical Reserve Corps.
The course centers on the general topics of violence prevention, site security and personal security, which are relevant to everyone. Additional details are tailored to MRC and other volunteers who serve at community emergency response sites, such as shelters or vaccination clinics. It is entitled "A Safe Haven: Reducing the Risk of Violence at a Community Crisis-Response Site."
Admission is free; refreshments will be served, and audience participation in question and answers will be encouraged. The instructor is Ippolit C. Matjucha, MD, chair of the Sudbury Medical Reserve Corps.

This event is also being hosted by the Sudbury Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), who have organized and made available an emergency shelter/warming/comfort/power station at the Fairbanks Community Center during Sudbury's last 3 power outage/storm events. We and the Medical Reserve Corps regularly meet to discuss topics of safety and preparedness and welcome public participation. Join us!

Thank you, Marie, as always, for the constant support of your terrific team!
Your note reminds me to point out that this meeting should be of interest not only to those interested in learning about anti-violence principles and techniques, but also to anyone interested in learning about the volunteering opportunities available through both CERT and MRC to aid our community in the event of emergency need.
Members of CERT and MRC will be present at the course: please ask us for more information about the organizations during the break or after the course--we'll be very pleased to talk to you. New volunteers are being sought, and the application process is very straight-forward.
Come, learn, and meet us!

I was at Goodnow today to learn where all the switches are! For those who have not been in the meeting room, it is a great space! It should allow for good interaction with and particpation of the audience as questions come up.
This is not a self-defense class: the whole point of violence prevention is to minimize the likelihood that you will find yourself under attack and needing defense. Since these techniques are very straight-foward, and the aftermath of an unavoided violent encounter can be tragic, time spent on prevention is time well spent.
Hope to see you Sunday.
