Tsongas to Receive River Stewardship Award Friday in Sudbury
(EDITOR'S NOTE: The following was submitted by Josh Noble.)
Fifth District Congresswoman Niki Tsongas will be recognized for her strong advocacy on behalf of Massachusetts Rivers when she is presented with this year’s Outstanding River Steward Award by the River Stewardship Council in Sudbury tomorrow. The award presentation will take place at the kickoff to Riverfest, a weekend-long celebration of the Sudbury, Concord and Assabet Rivers.
As a member of the Natural Resources Committee in the House of Representatives, Tsongas has worked to preserve and protect the rivers and waterways in the Fifth Congressional District. She hosts an annual ‘River Day’ to highlight the importance of the Rivers in the communities she represents and to recognize the organizations, volunteers and different levels of government working together to sustain and preserve the integrity of these resources. Earlier this spring, Tsongas introduced legislation to help designate the Nashua River as a Wild & Scenic River, a classification which would help preserve and protect this historic waterway while making it eligible to receive federal funding for further conservation efforts.
This year’s Riverfest will feature various tributes to Massachusetts Rivers including fishing derbies and art shows. The River Stewardship Council is a partnership of representatives from eight shoreline communities along the Sudbury, Concord and Assabet Rivers, state and federal agencies and three regional conservation organizations.
