Breaking Out the Shorts After a Long Winter

Here's some styles you'll find in store windows.

Hello, Mr. Sunshine. We’ve been waiting for you. With the sweet sunlight finally shining down, it’s time to shave our legs.

Ready or not, shorts season is here. For those of you who prefer shorts rather than skirts or sundresses, you’re in luck. The stores are now carrying endless options from cutoffs to cargos and everything in between. Whether you’re looking for an athletic, casual or dressy pair of shorts, you’ll be sure to find them this season.

Here are several styles you'll find in the stores today:

  • Bermuda shorts or cargos (a more casual version of the Bermuda) at stores such as Old Navy or Land's End for around $24.
  • Wide leg lightweight shorts (they almost looks like a skirt) at BCBG — $68.
  • Tailored shorts for a dressier look such as linen belted shorts at Ann Taylor Loft for $49.50.
  • Relaxed fit shorts such as NY & Co. sports shorts drawstring pull-on cargo for $36, or American Rag Shorts drawstring tie relaxed linen for $39 at Macy's.
  • Rompers — These are basically a one-piece jumpsuit in a shorts version. Rompers aren't what they used to be. Nordstroms is carrying a Mimi Chica Ruffled Strapless Romper for $44. Try accessorizing a romper with a cute belt and you'll have comfort and style in one.
  • Skorts — You can always try a skort if you want the flexibility of shorts but the look of a skirt. Try a Land's End Knit Skort for $24.50.
  • Fabrics — Shorts can be found in many different fabrics, such as jean, silk linen, silk, cotton, corduroy, stretch sateen, gingham, and chambray.
  • Colors — Today's shorts come in great colors and prints such as Ellen Tracy Bermuda Shorts at Macys for $49.99
  • Waistbands — Try either drawstring or tie waist, elastic or classic waistband with button.
  • Hem styles — You'll find cuffed shorts such as Lands End’s Women's Cuffed Chino Shorts for $39.50, uncuffed hems such as the straight fitted, classic jean shorts at White House/Black Market for $58 or cut-off jean shorts that give a very casual look such as Levis' 501 Cut-Off Shorts for $49.50. Try pairing them with a soft, flowy blouse and cute sandals.

TIPS:

  • Make sure the shorts fit well on your waist, hip and thighs. They need to fit the largest part of your bottom half.
  • A flat front is the most flattering for every shape. Try to stay away from pleats, especially if you have a fuller bottom. However, if you have a straighter figure and are looking for ways to add volume to your bottom half then you may want to try Women’s Pleated Linen-Blend Shorts from Old Navy for $24.94.
  • Find a length that works with your body type. You'll find specialty sizes for petite or tall women. For petite styles you may consider Jones New York Signature Petite Shorts, Flat Front Utility Pocket $49 at Macy’s. For taller women you may want to try Old Navy shorts carry tall sizes costing between $19 to $24.
  • If you're a bit on the shorter side, try to avoid cuffing your shorts or purchasing a pair that's cuffed already — this shortens the look of your legs.
  • If you have fuller thighs, try to find shorts that don’t stop right at the knee (slightly above or below is better).  Shorts at knee level tend to accentuate areas that many women would rather hide.
  • Accessorize by wearing shorts with a skinny belt or perhaps a wide belt or colorful scarf to make more of a statement.
  • Don’t forget your feet. Shorts can be worn with any type of shoes from flats and sneakers to heels and wedges. It’s important to make the right choice because your legs may appear longer or shorter based on the shorts and heel height you select.

With all of the styles and tips I mentioned, I want to leave you with one very important thing to think about. Think of shorts as a shorter version of pants and the shopping process will be much easier. Just keep in mind that similar rules apply whether you’re buying a fabulous pair of jeans or shorts. It might take time but you'll find the right pair that's both comfortable and figure-flattering. Trust me, we all have our own particular concerns about our bodies, but with the clothing choices available today you’ll be happy knowing that a great pair of shorts is out there waiting for you.
