DISCUSSION: Is the Warrant Article on Gunfire Warranted?
Resident Jim Cavanaugh wants to add an amendment to buffer zones around schools and playgrounds.
Gun control has been a hot topic nationwide since the Sandy Hook tragedy.
Now, resident Jim Cavanaugh wants to bring an amendment to the bylaw so children playing in local schoolyards can't hear the firing of automatic guns.
So we want to know: Is the warrant article adding an amendment to gunfire near schools and playgrounds warranted? Tell us in the comments section below.

Little to no kids in Massachusetts are hearing gunfire when they are in the schoolyard as it is. Not to mention it's school and they are inside the building a majority of the time. This amendment is completely unnecessary and will only prove to be a nuisance for the people who live near the school and are having their rights restricted.

Again, this is all because a certain business wouldn't cave in to the wants of Mr. Cavanaugh, I'm sorry but educate the children about the noise, don't make laws to infringe on everybody because of one person. This whole thing article is a waste of time.

What are the sources of gunfire noise around Sudbury? Shooting ranges, hunting and hstorical re-enactments.
Shooting ranges serve a public good: people licensed to legally own firearms need places to be trained and to maintain their skill in using those firearms. Shooting ranges make that possible. In fact, for that reason state law protects regulation-compliant shooting ranges (General Laws: CHAPTER 214, Section 7B).
Legal hunting is carefully regulated; local hunting of waterfowl is even controlled by federal regulations. Hunters help control animal populations, provide food for their families and others, pay license fees and other taxes that are also used to help manage wildlife and preserve habitat, and are preserving and passing on a valued part of American heritage.
Similarly, historical groups such as the Sudbury Companies of Militia and Minute (Sudbury minutemen) are part of who we are here. While a company delivering a fusilade, in re-enactment or practice, might sound to some like "automatic guns," they are not. They are a celebration of our proud history.
So, yes, I agree that if some children become concerned about the sound of distant gunfire, education about that sound is far better than trying to eliminate it from their experience.
