Discussion: Who Would You Like to See Run for Board of Selectmen?

Now that the town has voted to add two seats, who would best fill those positions?

Although state legislature has yet to pass Sudbury's vote to expand its board of selectmen from three to five members, talk of who should fill the two new seats has begun to fire up.

Resident Michael Troiano, who was a main architect of the article at Special Town Meeting, told Sudbury Patch his goal wasn't to become one to fill a seat. He also added if other residents felt strongly he would be an ideal candidate, he would consider it.

On Facebook, one resident recommended Siobhan McLaughlin Hullinger and Scott Nassa run for selectmen.

Sudbury Patch now turns the conversation over to you: Who should fill those seats?

Tell us why in the comments section below.

I would vote for Mike Troiano. He has a demeanor and background that brings people to the table. It would be great if there were new faces with fresh ideas

I'd only vote for a candidate who was interested in reaching a fair contractual agreement with the town's unionized workers: police, fire & teachers. A town this wealthy can afford to pass overrides and meet the cost of living increases that those key workers face.

that's easy - Bryan Semple

he is smart, articulate, well-liked, sticks to the facts and wants only what's best for Sudbury.

Great list. Nearly 1/2 ran already and lost--the people spoke.

Just because some previously ran and lost should not preclude them from running again. Each election cycle has it's own dynamics, opponents, # of seats available, issues before the town, etc. The people may have spoken on one day in the past, but the questions and discussions evolve.

Just like with 3-5 then, eh? Maybe that's why a townwide vote is so scary!

I'd like to see the high school debate team run the debates this year. Gets the students involved in the local process.

Siobhan, that would be an excellent suggestion.

JJoseph, I like your list but I can't see Eric Poch and Bob Stein serving on the BOS together. You would have to seat them on opposite ends of the table so they wouldn't kill each other.

It would be more of the same if Selectmen could not get along.

@Sudburytoo - I don't think I agree with that. I think breaking up or at least diluting the voices of the group that has the stranglehold on our town currently, creates an opportunity for fresh voices, fresh ideas, forward movement with collective decisions ...maybe even use Robert's rules for a change. It's just silly the way it is now. Take for instance the license extensions for Thanksgiving - did Chair O'Biren have a conflict or not? During Selectman Haarde's investigation, he had one, yet he didn't for the extension - just silly when you think about it. Is that the kind of nonsense you want governing your tax dollars. Also, why is it a "tradition" to extend times for a bar for college kids - do we want them drinking and driving at 2am? It's a tradition to extend the license of a bar, according to Selectman Drobinski, yet the "tradition" of passing the Chair of the BOS to the next to run for re-election was null and void for Selectman Haarde's turn. Tradition seems to be at at whim and not of "tradition".

JJoseph, I'd like to add to your list. For BOS, Siobhan McLaughlin Hullinger and Scott Nassa. For SPSC Christine Driscoll Hogan. I also like the Bill Semple addition.

Thanks for the mention JJoseph. I'd have to agree with Siobhan here, Ralph in that Bob and I would have no problem serving together. I think there are more ideas with respect to direction and transparency that we share than are different. While we may differ in style and approach, I think in our own ways we each have tried to be provacative in addressing the needs of the town and trying to inspire different thinking amongst our neighbors. The times change and as they do, we can either help shape it by being proactive, or remain with the status quo and be subject to whaterver befalls us. Either way, we're all in it together.
