Do You Design Your Wardrobe Like You Do Your Home?

Wardrobe consultants and interior designers are more alike than you may think.

Have you ever walked into a friend’s home and realized that their home décor is very similar to their clothing style? Perhaps they wear timeless classics such as khakis with a white button-down shirt and ballet flats, and to top it off they throw in a splash of color with a bright blue scarf.

If you look around their home you may find neutral-toned couches with vibrantly colored accent pillows. Or maybe you're visiting a friend who prefers contemporary clothing styles over casual chic, so her home décor may be full of accent pillows decorated with fur rather than faux suede.

In the same way that area rugs and picture frames add texture and warmth to your rooms, jewelry, scarves, and even a fun pair of tights can help add color and spice to your outfits.  Wardrobe consultants and interior designers, such as Anya Martin of Anya Martin Design in Sudbury, both work with people to try to take their basics and use accent pieces to make a statement — whether subtle or grand.  It's fun to mix traditional with vintage or contemporary. This gives you a bit of flair and shows that you’re not using the typical “cookie-cutter” ideas when decorating your home or dressing your body. It's especially important to follow your own style!

According to wikipedia.org: “A style … is a consistent idea used throughout a room to create a feeling of completeness.” Clearly, the same thing can be said regarding one’s wardrobe.  Dealing with style, color, texture, and how items flow together are essential pieces that designers need to think about.

Most importantly, we have to consider our clients’ personalities and the impressions they’re trying to make. The idea is to pull together outfits or create rooms that make you feel good, feel confident, and feel like you've created a finished look.  With the help of interior decorators and/or wardrobe consultants, you're well on your way to showing your true personality in either your home or wardrobe.

Whether considering design choices for your family room or the clothes in your closet, you should ask yourself questions such as:

  • What colors do I like?
  • What style am I drawn to?
  • How will everything work together?

The bottom line is that you want to be able to create the look and style that shows who you are!
