Girls Cross Country Team Opens Home Schedule with Double Victories
Warriors sprint past Acton-Boxboro and Westford Academy.
On Wednesday, the 2009 state champion Lincoln-Sudbury girls cross country team opened its home schedule against Acton-Boxboro and Westford Academy.
With evenly-matched L-S and A-B teams both vying to be overall DCL champions, tension hung in the hot afternoon air.
The girls race went out slowly to conserve energy with temperatures in the mid 80s. After 400 meters, L-S senior Andrea Keklak and two A-B runners separated from the pack, which remained in pursuit 15 seconds behind the three lead runners through the first mile into the wooded portion of the course.
At about the 12:00 mark, Keklak emerged from the woods, with the two A-B runners trailing by 20 seconds. Keklak cruised to the finish with a time of 16:47 for the 2.75-mile course, followed by A-B in second and third, L-S's Marika Crowe, Megan Broecker and Emily Knaul finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, with Katie LaScaleia in ninth, for an L-S point total of 25.
In the other race against Westford Academy, L-S took all five lead spots for 15 points to WA's 50.
In the JV race, freshman Kayla Harvey ran alone up front for the entire race to finish first and lead L-S to wins over A-B and WA.
