How Will Sale of Shaw's & Star Market Change Our Local Grocery Stores?

No immediate changes planned, but store leases could eventually be sold, analysts say.

The new owners of local Star Market and Shaw's supermarkets say no immediate changes are planned for the stores.

There is one store in Sudbury: a Shaw's on Boston Post Road.

According to the Boston Globe, there are 155 Shaw's and 14 Star Markets with 17,000 employees. In November the troubled company had announced cutting 700 jobs.

The new owners, an investor group led by Cerberus Capital Management, bought the stores as part of a bigger $3.3 billion deal. Cerberus also controls the locally based Steward Health Care System network of community hospitals

The Boston Herald says Albertson's will take over all the New England Shaw's and Star Markets. Albertson's is a well-known supermarket brand name in the West and parts of the northern Midwest.

The Herald also reports that the deal has industry analysts guessing that some of the Shaw’s and Star Markets could be sold off again to others after the deal is done.

Do you shop at Shaw's or Star? Does it matter to you who owns the company?

I didn't think Shaw's in Sudbury renewed their lease. I heard Whole Foods was moving into the space when their lease expires in Wayland. I haven't verified it.

Like I said Bob, I haven't verified it but I did speak with the manager in the cheese area and he did confirm it was a "possibility". According to him, they need a larger space because Wayland is too small to carry all their products and they don't want to continue the practice of sending people to the Framingham location. He was the one who said they will likely not renew the lease in Wayland if they can sign somewhere else in the area. The opening of Wayland Commons is seen as potentially having an impact as well. This was early Fall when he told me.

While I'd LOVE a Whole Foods in town, or even a Trader Joe's, if Shaws becomes more "Albertsons-like," that would be great. We loved Albertsons when we lived out West.

The employees at Shaws are the best! Who ever takes over - I do hope the current employees can keep their jobs-
