LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Nixon Roof Estimate is Higher

Sudbury Public Schools Committee Vice Chair Lisa Gutch says the updated estimate is $38,000 more than previously reported.

Several weeks ago, an estimate of $750,000 for Article 1, Roof Replacement and Repair - Nixon Elementary School, was submitted for the Sept. 24 Special Town Meeting Official Warrant.

Since the time that the Warrant was published, the architect who has been assigned to Sudbury by the Massachusetts School Building Authority has completed an initial design for the roof.

This week, with the completion of this design work, we were given an updated estimate that is $38,000 higher than the estimate provided for the Town Warrant.

The estimate that will be presented at the Special Town Meeting on Monday is $788,000.

Respectfully,

Lisa Gutch Vice Chair

Sudbury School Committee

How is this possible? Of course it's the architect's fault. Looks to me like somebody didn't do their homework. This was presented to Fincom at Tuesday night's meeting, why are we just finding out about the increase on Friday evening?

Will somebody with a solid business background please run for SPS next year?

Who provided the estimate? Was there a public RFP? Who responded and what were the quotes?

To borrow and amend slightly Lisa's very clear explanation here:
http://sudbury.patch.com/articles/letter-to-the-editor-time-to-fix-nixon-school-roof

The estimated cost of the Nixon roof project is $788,000 (the amended cost) plus the cost of debt issuance. Sudbury is eligible to receive 36.89% of approved costs in reimbursement from the MSBA. In order to participate in this cost-sharing, the Town of Sudbury must vote at the Sept. 24 Special Town Meeting to appropriate the total cost of the project, with the understanding that the Town will bond only Sudbury’s portion of this project (total cost less MSBA reimbursement).
