The Sudbury Military Support Network (SMSN) wishes to thank the citizens and businesses of Sudbury for their generous support during our second annual Military Appreciation Month. It is an exceptionally stressful time for our many military families, and Sudbury continues to have personnel stationed in harms way. The SMSN goals are to support our military and their families before, during and after deployment, and to raise awareness in the community about the needs of our soldiers and veterans.
During Military Appreciation Month, we partnered with HOPEsudbury in the dedication of their new flagpole at Goodnow Library. We were joined by the Selectmen and by the Library Board in recognizing this wonderful gift to the community. Veterans and active duty service members were also in attendance.
The LSRHS student senate dedicated a plaque to honor the L-S grads who have served or are serving in the armed forces since 9/11. We have had well over 30 members of our community serve in this capacity. The plaque was accompanied by a framed American flag that was flown over FOB Shank in Afghanistan, and donated by Cpt. Thom Kenney. Our many thanks go to Emily Casey, student senate president, for arranging this amazing endeavor!
We’d like to recognize all of the organizations that helped to make Military Appreciation Month a success: AdTech, Bosse Sports Club, Especially for Pets, HOPEsudbury, Invidia Salon, Koko FitClub, My PassionFlower, AAA Limousine, Quality Car Wash, Rejuvenate Massage, Sudbury Pharmacy, Sudbury Pizza, Sudbury Taylor Rental, Sudbury United Methodist Church, Ultra Salon, Wayside Inn, Duck Soup and Wendy Wheeler.
A very special thanks for extraordinary generosity and support go to Longfellow Health Center, Sudbury Coffee Works, Ted and Eileen Pasquarello, Sullivan Tire and the Lt. Scott Milley Ranger Foundation.
This fall, our annual Care Package Drive for the Troops will take place at Sudbury Farms on Oct. 28. We will also be hosting a Veterans Day luncheon in conjunction with the Sudbury Senior Center on Nov. 14. We are hoping to expand our Veterans Day programming at the elementary school level as well. If you would like to volunteer to help with any of these activities, please contact Patty Houpt at phoupt@hotmail.com. Please visit our website for a full listing of all of our resources, www.sudburymilitarysupportnetwork.org.
I would also like to recognize the many volunteers who make this organization such a valuable resource to the community. First and foremost, Robin Gunderson and Rachel Goodrich have dedicated countless ours to our success. Maryanne Bilodeau and John Drobinski and our local firefighters have been instrumental in organizing support from Town government, and in setting up and taking down our Welcome Home banners on Town Hall. Cindy Beckham, Janice Milley, Jennifer Van Steenberg, Nancy Eckersley, Debbie Crane, Larry Mariasis, Sharon Jones and Mary Mahoney have helped out with a variety of events. Many thanks to Mark Kablack for his pro bono legal services in helping us to set up and run a non-profit organization.
Thanks to all for the ways that you are helping us to fulfill our mission to our troops, their families and our Veterans.
