Powerful Second Half Sparks L-S Football Team Past Westford Academy

Warriors tally 28 unanswered points to improve to 8-0.

On a frigid night at Myers Field in Sudbury, the Westford Academy football team caught fire in the first half, and the Grey Ghosts put a scare into Lincoln-Sudbury's dreams of an undefeated season.

But the Warrior defense tightened up in the second half, however, allowing only one second-half first down, and the offense rang up 28 unanswered points to cruise to a 38-14 victory.

Down 14-10 at the half, the Warriors didn’t take long to pick themselves up as Brian Carroll brought back the opening kickoff of the third quarter into Westford territory. Lincoln-Sudbury fought their way toward the endzone for 10 plays highlighted by a Matt Cahill pass to Jack Harris for 18 yards on third and 10. Chris Giorgio finished off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run and 17-14 Warrior lead.

A 44-yard pass from Cahill to Harris set up a 9-yard touchdown run from Carroll and a 24-14 lead.

After the Warriors started the fourth quarter with great field position, Cahill completed another long pass to Harris for 38 yards, setting up a 6-yard Giorgio touchdown run for a 31-14 lead.

The Warriors defense forced three Westford punts, and two turnovers to shut down the Grey Ghosts second half attack. The boisterous crowd became silent after Carroll broke up a Westford pass and survived a major collision on defense. After Carroll walked off the field to the relief of fans, Chris Giorgio finished off the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown run for a 38-14 final.

“We responded well in the second half,” Lopez said. “In the first half we turned the ball over and gave Westford a short field to work with.”

In the first half, Henry Guild picked off Westford QB Justin Mount’s first pass of the game, and put the Warriors deep in Westford territory early in the first quarter. But Lincoln-Sudbury fumbled it right back to Westford, negating a strong scoring chance. Mount and the Grey Ghosts followed with a 66-yard, 14-play drive that led to an Alex Eaton touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Lincoln-Sudbury followed with a long drive highlighted by three Carroll runs totaling 46 yards, and ended with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Cahill to Dan Cellucci.

After stopping Westford on downs, Lincoln-Sudbury rode three more long runs from Carroll and Giorgio, leading to a 28-yard field goal by Will Twyman for a 10-7 lead.

Westford continued to hang tough after an interception, forcing a Carroll fumble at the 50-yard line. On the ensuing drive Justin Mount ran for 14 yards on third down and 11 and scored on a 17-yard run with 6 seconds to go in the first half. Down 14-10, Lincoln-Sudbury needed to regroup on both offense and defense.

Lincoln-Sudbury goes for nine straight wins against Acton-Boxboro on Nov. 4.
