Spring is the Season for Trench Coats

This type of outerwear is a timeless fashion.

I can’t believe it! I can finally see some grass underneath all those layers of melting snow.

Now, let’s switch out those heavy, ski jackets for some lighter outerwear. Trench coats are all the rage for spring. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, trench coats are defined as “a usually double-breasted raincoat with deep pockets, wide belt, and often straps on the shoulders.”

Well, that may be their definition, but if you check out this year’s spring fashions, you will see that anything goes. Plenty of different colors and styles are being shown at every store from to Nordstrom.

If you intend to search for a trench this season, keep in mind that they aren’t all the same. They may look really cute on the hanger, but make sure you try them on. A coat should fit and flatter your body type just like a great pair of jeans or a nice skirt.

Finding the right silhouette can be tricky. If you come across a coat that seems to fit your shoulders but not your waist, you can try the next size up, but chances are that this particular trench is not for you. Trust me, just like there is a pair of jeans that was made for you (I promise), there’s a coat with the right fit and style.

Whether you’re looking for a short or long trench, here is my list of 10 popular style options:

  • Ruffled or tiered hem
  • Belted or Tie Waist: Many coats come with attachable belts or tie waists. However, feel free to create a mix n’ match look with a funky belt or even a wide ribbon that matches your personality e.g. snakeskin belt, or a classic, silk ribbon or scarf
  • Piping options: A monochromatic look such as a blue coat with dark blue piping, or a multi-colored look such as bold black piping on a camel-colored coat.
  • Fun, multi buttons: different colors, different shapes
  • Collar: a straight-point collar, oversized shawl, notched. If you’re more petite, you may want to stay away from the busier neckline and perhaps go for a simpler design.
  • Cool prints: graphics such as polka dot or animal prints
  • Fun lining such as paisley or an animal print
  • Blast of color: Try coral, bright blues, greens, or reds.
  • Fabrics: stretch denim, soft suede, nylon, cotton blends, sateen
  • Pleated back or front: pleats flatter and enhance a great a-line style

Linda Shulman of in Sudbury says: "Men should also consider adding a trench coat to their wardrobe. A streamlined style that hits just above the knee can be worn with jeans or a suit. These coats have tremendous versatility."

Remember, you don’t need a special occasion to wear a trench coat. If you want to create a more casual look, try layering a button-down or tank top underneath a shorter trench and pair it with jeans. If you prefer a dressier look, then you can try it with a skirt and cute necklace.

The best part about the trenches this season is that they’re great layering pieces, especially for our tricky weather. Warm days, cool nights, no matter the occasion, the classic trench coat always works!
