I have found that if I don't turn on the heat when I'm cold I'll get sick instead and then I have to pay the doctor and/or pay for a whole lot of cold medications. It's easier and cheaper to turn on the heat.

I’m with you Sandy, don’t want to turn the heat on until at least November. I have blankets and throws conveniently placed all around the house; put an extra heavy blanket over my comforter; and wear a warm and plush long bathrobe if I need to. National Grid will have to wait.

It's not a question of when to turn it on. My system turns itself on, based on the outside temperature and the programming in the control box. And because it is super efficient gas with five sensors, it can cut the chill in the house for pennies a day on a very gentle gradient. ON or OFF is yesterday's method. Only in January/February I start using the wood stove that really puts out the big heat.

I started my wood stove yesterday .Have used 100 gal of oil since Sept. 2011

Used the wood stove and a space heater in the bed room. I love having a woodstove and a cousin that is a tree guy.

We wait for the first sub freezing day in November.

I turned on my heat last night: no tolerance for cold in this house...

I wait until National Grid reads the meter in October; then I turn on the gas. That way I get another month of just 0-1 therms used and a minimum monthly bill. Until then, I toss a few logs in the woodstove and get really toasty

Just fired up the Pellet stove last night for the first time. As for the actual heat, I used it one morning to take the chill out. Otherwise the only time it will run all winter is for hot water. Only used 300 gallons of oil in the last two years. But to answer the question. back before the pellet stove it was usually around the last week of October.

Last night when the temperatures went sub-freezing! I live in an older, poorly insulated house...

Hey Walt. Welcome to Woburn. Senior all the way, Junior needs to grow up. Then maybe he will win some races. Anyways, Oil heat or Gas? Won't be needing it much this week! I have a reliable Oil company if you need one.

I keep the heat on whenever I'm cold. we cozy over here.

It'll have to be really cold before I turn on my heat. Am an open water swimmer so am used to putting up with a little chilly atmosphere. Plus, don't like paying National Grid for something I don't really need yet. Wrapping up does just fine. Don't have to always be seeking an easy comfort level.
