As a homeowner, there’s nothing more important than keeping your home and your family safe. While FBI crime statistics show that the number of burglaries in the United States went down from 2010 to 2011, most burglaries are committed during the summer months when people are away on vacation. And with getaway season fast approaching, now is the perfect time to make sure your home is protected. Installing a home security system can bring you peace of mind—but did you know that it could also save you money at the same time?
According to FBI statistics, installing a monitored security system decreases the chance of a break-in by up to 80 percent—making it that much less likely that you will have to spend money to replace stolen items. Plus, a 24-hour security system, which could cost as little as a dollar a day, helps guard your home against fire, carbon monoxide dangers, flood and other critical—and potentially costly—conditions.
Investing in a security system also can save you money on homeowners insurance. According to MSN Money, installing a home security system could help you save 20 to 25 percent on your homeowner’s insurance premium.
You’ve heard of a smart phone—but what about a smart home? There are now security systems that let you control things in your home from your office or smart phone. That means you can remotely activate or deactivate your home alarm system, lock doors, set thermostats and turn on or off lights. This new way of interacting with your home is very convenient and saves costs—the perfect combination.

Here is an idea that really works. Leave the TV on while you are gone. I have never heard of a crook breaking into a house when they heard or saw the TV on.
This is the cheapest and easiest burgular alarm you use and you already have at least one in your home..

Save electricity and leave a radio on instead. Try a talk radio station so it sounds as if people are having a conversation.

Paul about TV's and Big Ticket Eletronics Never ever toss the TV box that it came in outside in the trash. They ride around to see what you have new. Computer boxes anything like that. Ive been checking out camera's at Cosco's they seem to have the best price and wierless too.Do Not say anything about vacation and if you talk on the phone use a line in not a cordless.

I think what you don’t do can be as important as what you do in terms of home security.
Don’t post pictures or descriptions to Facebook while you are away – even if you think your page is secure. Items can be re-posted; word gets around fast on the internet.
Don’t let mail or newspapers stack up in your mailbox, or on your driveway or porch.
Don’t let the lawn get out of control. Don’t let the driveway or sidewalks collect snow and ice. Hire a service or someone you trust to care for your property while you’re gone.
If you have a home phone, don’t forget to check and delete messages. If a crook thinks you’re not home they may call you to check, a full voice mailbox is a convenient tip.

Those are great tips UglyHat, If you have someone who is already watching any pets you have they would make a great person to care for the property and take in your mail.

There are websites devoted to crawling Facebook/Foursquare for public posts about people being away from their house. Posting stuff like that is silly, and you're literally asking to be robbed.

If you set these systems up, make sure they are secured from remote and unauthorized access of users... how would you feel if someone had access to your home security systems and your home automation systems without you knowing? It's very easy to find systems that are unprotected against such things. Make sure you know what you're doing before setting up such systems.

I live in East Milton and my home was broken into at the begining of the year. Never thought it would happen to me. They just pushed the front door in. That was the door I figured they wouldn't come through (neighbors all around and visible to the street) but they did and stole jewelery and a small amount of cash as well as ransacked the bedrooms. I suggest at a minimum that you replace or add to your 100 year old locksets in your home by getting at least an additional deadbolt. The old one on my original door barely went into the door casing and proved to be a very weak point. A $30 and 10 minute job could have potentially saved me peace of mind and thousands in losses.
I have a system now. Patriot Alarm in Canton has worked well for me so far, happy with the service they provide.

Oh, another thing. After this happened to me, I started reading the Police log more. This kind of thing happens on a fairly regular basis, probably at least 2 homes a week in Milton alone. Remember all of the car break ins last Summer? The area might be low in crime but these type of break ins seem to be increasing. When I asked neighboring police departments if they have any suspects that have admitted to any break ins in Milton, one officer mentioned Norwell had 30 break ins in November 2011 and this was also around the time the captured a bunch of addicts who confessed to entering over 40 homes in the South Shore over the last 2 months, and that was only one group.

I had cameras installed inside an outside my home, I can view my home from anywhere via the Internet an cell even if I'm out of the country. An best of all The it's recording 24/7 an being sent to my cell or my spouses so stealing the receiver WON'T HELP THE THEIF.

This is a pretty common misconception. All video is stored on the receiver or a hard disk drive in the component itself. When you pull up video on your smartphone or tablet you're either watching live or playing back from the receiver. If someone comes in and takes it, all your video is gone with it. Lots of very common misconceptions about home security and wireless do-it-yourself camera kits. None of them are effective if the thief disables the device.

Yes but is it possible to hack into your system if its wireless?
SomeoneOrSomething
1:37 pm on Thursday, June 28, 2012
Yes, wireless systems are not best suited for security. Wired systems via Ethernet are always the better choice when it comes to the aspect of security. If you do use wireless, make sure to use WPA2 for the encryption type (AES algorhythm if available). WEP encryption keys are very easy to crack. Please read articles from Cisco in regards to types of Wireless Encryption.

Comcast's new Xfinity Home Security service is amazing and one of the cheapest alternatives out there to ADT who's service is incredibly invasive and expensive.
I'm getting mine installed soon. Wireless Camera's set up on their own back office wifi network that is secured and private. Advanced rules/alerts that are 100% customizable allowing you to get text message video/picture updates when doors or windows open, etc.. and live streaming monitoring of video, lights, temperature etc all from any smartphone, tablet, or internet-connected device.

This is a paid for advertisement and it is apparent that most of the comments are setup from sales rep correspondence. Pretty soon the Wellesley Patch info/site will be 100% spam.

Chris, the setups/plants by the advertisers obviously reflect poorly on the credibility of the Wellesley Patch as "the Patch" is accepting such a practice of advertisements to occur mingled with "newsworthy" blogs. It is my opinion you are not headed in the right direction. Did the editor from the Melrose patch agree?

Chris, why did "How to save money with a home security system" get categorized as News when it was a sponsored ad and why was "Wellesley Home to some of the best places in America to Work" pulled? Possibly it was an ad which was placed in the News section as well?
