Boy Scout Troop 63 Holding Open House on 10/3

Does the idea of climbing 60 feet on a clear sheet of ice send a chill up your up spine? Would you like to bounce through Class 5 rapids on a rubber raft? Does the image of sailing in the Bahamas bring a smile to your face?

If so and you are a boy from 10 to 17 years old, then you should join Troop 63. Once a month, the troop conducts an outdoor activity, such as hiking in New Hampshire, biking in Cape Cod, and rifle shooting at the Maynard Rod and Gun Club. In addition, the boys attend a week of summer camp in Bolton, Mass. where they learn how to operate sail boats and canoes; shoot a bow and arrows; and maneuver through a ropes course with a 50 foot zip line.

High adventure is another part of the Scouting experience. The troop hikes through the Grand Canyon in New Mexico and Arizona, takes a 10 day canoe trip though the lakes of Minnesota, leisurely sails among the islands in the Bahamas, and goes mountain biking and skateboarding in West Virginia.

The troop meets weekly. Boys learn how to pitch a tent; plan and cook a meal; and start a fire without any matches. They also watch movies; play video games; learn board games; show others their hobbies, and hold push up, pull up, sit up, and running contests.

In addition to having a lot of fun, Boy Scouts learn valuable lessons. Scouting focuses on community service, and members have collected food for local food pantry, aided at the Special Olympics, and started book drives for underprivileged children Meeting and events are planned by the members, so they gain valuable management skills.

For those interested in joining the fun, Troop 63 is holding an Open House for potential Scouts and their parents on Thursday, Oct. 3 from 7:30 to 8:45 at Our Lady of Fatima, 160 Concord Road in Sudbury. You can also contact the troop by email at troop63bsa@gmail.com .
