Twenty-five years after its delightful American premiere in Concord MA, “Ebenezer Scrooge: A Christmas Carol,” New Life Fine Arts’ thrilling musical adaptation of the 1843 Charles Dickens story, comes again to Concord for nine uplifting performances, December 13th to 22nd. Glenn Gray of Sudbury starred in that premier showing and again returns to the cast playing the role of “The Spirit of Christmas Past” and “The Spirit of Christmas Present”. His wife Jo-Anne and three of his children, Sparrow, Jasmine and Misha join him on the stage in The Concord-based theater company. This powerfully orchestrated musical retelling of the radical, Christmas-Eve transformation of ageing Ebenezer Scrooge—the “Bah-humbug”-ing miser who hates Christmas—has become a New England tradition, gripping and inspiring audiences since 1987. The show features a talented cast of 60 complete with a small orchestra, colorful sets, costumes and special effects that will lift audiences back to a long-ago, wintry Victorian London for Scrooge’s unforgettable encounter with the Christmas Spirit. The retelling of Scrooge’s unhappy past and present preoccupations, with predictions of his woeful future, is interwoven with original songs by Concord composer and playwright David MacAdam as well as with well-known Christmas carols, including “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” written by Boston’s own Phillips Brooks. The cast, with marvelous songs, leads theatergoers to the moment of the startling change that overtakes Scrooge—and by the show’s climax even the audience might be tempted to join in singing, “We hear the Christmas Angels / the great glad tidings tell, / O come with us, / Abide with us, / Our Lord Emmanuel!” MacAdam wrote Scrooge in 1984 while he was living in England, where it also was first staged. All nine performances will be held at the Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts, 40 Stow Street, Concord, MA—right in Concord Center.
