The Sudbury Companies of Militia and Minute, under the leadership of Colonel Jack McCarter and accompanied by the Sudbury Ancient Fyfe and Drum Companie, will recreate the April 19, 1775 march of over 300 Sudbury men to Concord to take part in the battles of Lexington and Concord at the start of the American Revolution. The Companies will assemble first at the First Parish Meeting House in Wayland Center at 3:45 AM for a march along Old Sudbury Road and Glezen Lane to the Grout-Heard House, North Cemetery and the Old Training Field where salutes will be fired commemorating the participation of the East Company of the SCMM in the events of 1775.
The troops will reassemble at 5:30 AM in Sudbury Center for a brief ceremony and step off for Concord at 6:00 AM. On the route up Concord, Pantry and Dakin Roads, the Companies will fire salutes at the Revolutionary War Cemetery, North Cemetery and at the Concord town line although sporadic firing will take place along the entire route in Sudbury. The Companies anticipate arrival at North Bridge National Park at 10:30 with a ceremony on the bridge at 11:00.
The event provides another opportunity to learn about Sudbury’s history in this year of celebration of the incorporation of the Town on September 4, 1638. To read more about the Celebrate 375 events, check on-line at http://sudbury.ma.us/375.
