Lincoln Local Caleb Smith Featured in Walnut Hill’s Production of The Learned Ladies

Natick, MA – Caleb Smith of Lincoln, MA will play the roles of Vadius and The Notary in Walnut Hill School for the Arts’ winter production of Molière’s The Learned Ladies this week.

The Learned Ladies pokes fun at the pretentiousness of academia and the conflicting views of a woman’s place in the world. At the center of the play is a mother desperately trying to convince both of her daughters, Henriette and Armande, to strive for a life of the mind, rather than typical domestic pursuits. Vadius, played by Smith, is the pompous rival scholar of Henriette’s love interest Trissotin. A reserved fop, Vadius aims to prevent Trissotin and Henriette’s marriage, while all the while claiming to be Trissotin’s friend. Each character in this world is a living, breathing embodiment of the question, “what is the right relationship between art and learning and everyday life?” Walnut Hill’s production will be directed by Steve McConnell of the Boston Conservatory and performances will be held on December 12, 13 &14 at 8:00pm at Studio 5 in Walnut Hill’s Dance Center in Natick, MA.

Caleb Smith, a sophomore, was most recently seen on the Walnut Hill stage as Winston Took in last year’s production of Coastal Disturbances by Tina Howe. He has also frequented the Middlesex School Summer Arts Program stage in productions including Into the Woods (The Baker), You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown (Schroeder), and Greater Tuna (Thurston Wheelis). Before coming to Walnut Hill, Smith was an active member of Concord Youth Theater, where he starred in A Year With Frog and Toad (Frog). In addition to his theater and academic studies, Smith is the Co-Head of Walnut Hill’s student a capella group The Mixed Nuts and is active in the youth group at Lincoln’s St. Anne's in the Fields'.
