Wolbach Farm Greenhouse

Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT) would like to inform you of our plans for the greenhouse at Wolbach Farm.  We regret that an alarming notice was posted to Sudbury Patch on Nov. 4, 2013 that contained inaccurate e information.

Although historic preservation is not explicitly part of SVT’s mission, we have nevertheless worked to preserve the historic features of our properties.  Since moving to Wolbach Farm 10 years ago, we have looked for someone or some entity that might be able to renovate and use the greenhouse.  We had many greenhouse “suitors” come to call, but after each visit, they found that it was not feasible.  We have tried stop-gap measures to keep the glassed portion from falling further into disrepair, but unfortunately, our strong winter storms rendered those measures futile.

The organization finally concluded that we should remove the glass, metal frame and associated piping and benches.  After that removal, we will then secure the beautiful stone foundation and the potting shed building.  This plan will be reviewed by the Historic Districts Commission.

We were fortunate to find the company that built this original greenhouse – Lord & Burnham.  We hope that they may be able to salvage some of the glass structure to use at other historic sites in New England.

The end result is that an important part of the historic Wolbach Farm will remain.
