Committee Aims to Have Memorial Day Ceremony for Scott Milley Reflection Area

About $25K raised so far for the project.

A memorial being erected at Willis Lake to honor the late First Lt. Scott F. Milley is taking shape, and the committee in charge of raising funds for the project is hoping to have a ceremony on Memorial Day to officially open the area.

Jim Kelly, Sudbury's combined facilities director and a member of the committee, said about $25,000 has been raised since April when the Board of Selectmen first approved of the memorial.

The goal is to raise $80,000, but Kelly thinks the project will be completed even if it's not met.

"We've got our work cut out for us," he said. "However, we think we can build this for less than $80,000 ... maybe for half of that. But we want to continue on our original goal, because if we can complete this (for less than $80,000), there's some other improvements we can do to dress up this whole area."

Willis Pond is where the US Army Ranger and his friends spent countless hours growing up in Sudbury.

Recently, a fundraiser at Kappy's Liquors in Sudbury netted about $1,200. And Cavicchio Greenhouses donated fieldstone to the project, saving thousands of dollars.

Kelly said the committee will meet soon to discuss having another fundraiser around February or March.

"We really need another event," he said. "That's something we'll talk about as a committee. Something where people can come out and hang out somewhere."

Milley was killed in action in Afghanistan on Nov. 30, 2010.

The Scott F. Milley Ranger Foundation is currently accepting donations for construction of reflection area. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do some by visiting the Scott F. Milley Ranger Foundation page.
