Why are snowplows operating in Sudbury for this storm (1/22)? There is one inch of powder and the sun is now out. This is complete waste of taxpayer money. NO one is managing snow removal in town, and most years the town is hundreds of thousands of dollars over budget. Why - because the town imposes no standards or cost limits on plowdrivers and simply signs off on their invoices. A few weeks ago, the plow plowed my street at least five times for a six inch snowfall. Only one or two plows were required. The town is being overbilled by a factor of two or three because nobody in town management looks to protect taxpayer interests. This means the town is throwing away hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money each year.

Why was my street plowed this morning (1/22) for a one inch powder snowfall, followed by a sunny day which is melting the snow. See my other post. This happened all over town. Even worse, I have been monitoring this for many years and it doesn't change - there is twice the amount of plowing going on than is necessary in every storm. Wow, what a waste of taxpayer money. There is no one in town management overseeing and putting limits on snow removal costs, which wastes hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money each year. No one looks at this but it is serious problem. This waste is a significant amount of money which could easily fund other town and school expenses and capital expenditures instead of being totally wasted because of lack of management.

Dave Dell - At least your street is plowed! My neighborhood has been a disaster this year. I don't think they even plowed after the last storm (prior to this one). It's very inconsistent for sure.

Hopefully you both have contacted the town manager and received a reasonable explanation.

Wow, darned if you do, darned if you don't. Those poor guys at the DPW can't win. No matter what they do someone has to complain. Too much plowing, too little plowing, no sand, not enough sand, too much sand. How can anybody at the DPW win at this game?

Annemarie Taylor, I don't think it's too much to ask for ALL roadways to be plowed to the same standard. Perhaps there is a monitoring problem at the DOW with subcontractors? I don't really know but it's quite dangerous for the children to walk to the bus stops, busses to navigate the multiple turns, teachers to get out of the neighborhood, firemen, police, employees and such if our roadways aren't cleared. What "win" are you referring to? It's the job and if you are subcontracting, then check to see if the work is actually done.

If the road truly ISN"T plowed you should call the DPW and politely ask for them to come and plow it. But what you seem to be describing is a plowed road that you don't feel is plowed to your specifications. What exactly do you feel isn't being done correctly? And is this the towns fault? Sometimes people start clearing their driveways and dump the snow into the road. This causes slippery conditions that cannot be blamed on the plow drivers. I have seen contract snowplowers who plow driveway plow the snow across the road without any regard to the fact they are pushing snow into the road. But you really don't mention any exact complaint, are your roads not plowed at all, are they plowed to narrow, do you feel that your road is not plowed in a timely manner? What exactly is happening on your road? Somehow I just can't see the DPW missing an entire road on their plow route.
