Renovations Begin Tuesday at Historic Wayside Inn

Renovations at the inn will be paid for through restaurant revenues.

One of the country's most historic inn will be getting a facelift starting on Tuesday.

Longfellow's Wayside Inn, located in Sudbury, is the oldest operating inn located in the United States having hosted travelers along Boston Post Road since 1716, according to its website.

The inn announced last week that the exterior of the inn and other outbuildings will be restored and repainted. A representative of the inn said work will begin on Tuesday.

"The work will be conducted using authentic methods and materials, which is critical to our mission to preserve this special place," said Innkeeper Steve Pickford in a recent Facebook post. "We appreciate that the Inn is one of the most photographed buildings in Massachusetts and has to be picture-perfect."

The Metrowest Daily News reported over the weekend that the renovations will cost about $100,000 and will be paid for through donations and revenue created from the Wayside Inn restaurant.

Breakfast is served to the public on Saturday and Sunday from 7-10:30 a.m. In addition, the Wayside Inn offers lunch Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and dinner Monday through Saturday starting at 5 p.m.

Dinner menu items range from appetizers of spinach and artichoke dip, shrimp cocktail, and fried calamari to entrees such as prime rib, Angus New York strip steak, swordfish and more.

Renovations will also include items like fixing clapboards, windows, and trim on the exterior of the buildings in addition to painting the inn.

Pickford told the newspaper that everything done at the Wayside Inn revolves around business generated through the Wayside Inn restaurant.

"It’s hard just to keep (the buildings) painted, just to keep a roof on them," Pickford told the MetroWest Daily News.
