Sudbury Firefighters 'Fight For Air' in Boston

Thirteen firefighters and residents with Sudbury ties climbed over 40 flights of stairs this weekend in the name of charity.

Along with first responders from all over Massachusetts, the firefighters in full turnout gear joined other resident as they climbed the stairs of the BNY Mellon Center on Washington Street in Boston on Saturday as part of the American Lung Association’s annual “Fight For Air” event.

Called a “vertical road race” by organizers, the event raises money and awareness for lung cancer, asthma, air pollution and other breathing disorders.  

Sudbury Firefighters Shane Medeiros, Michael Matros, Daniel Mulgrew, Mike Kilgallen, William Francis, Douglas Stone, Josh McLeod, and Daniel Stanton all participated in the event.

In addition, Sudbury resident John Magee represented Cambridge Fire Department, while resident Caleb Hagarty ran for Lincoln Fire Department. Sudbury's Debbie Howell, Maria Bowen and Cindy Fernandez all ran the event for Team Impact.

Magee placed highest of the firefighters from Sudbury, finishing 24th with a time of 8:57. He was also the top Sudbury resident in the overall competition, followed by Howell, whose time of 10:52 was good for 549th place.

Ryan Thomson, a Portland, Maine firefighter, won the firefighter division; while Andrew Hashway of Somerville, a part of the Gentle Giant Moving Company team, finished first out of all entrants.
