Sudbury Resident Bugged Out Over Dish Served from Lavender

A black insect was served with an order of orange chicken.

It wasn't what she was expecting, but a customer of Lavender Asian Cuisine & Bar received an added bite in her orange chicken the other night that she wishes she never saw.

According to a Sudbury resident who wished not to be identified, a takeout order of the savory dish came with a dead bug. The resident said when notified of the bug, the manager offered to send a new batch.

Instead, she asked for a refund but was turned down.

"Honestly I was surprised by the Lavender manager's attitude," she said. "He was not very concerned about this incident. When I asked him for a refund he basically yelled at me and hung up." 

Sudbury Health Director Robert Leupold said he was contacted by the resident about the incident and is looking into the case.

"It looks like an insect we've seen recently," he said, adding he did not know the name of the species. "I'll address this with the restaurant and meet with the owner."

Leupold said Lavender has a clean history in regards to health violations and added it's been some time since a complaint like this has been brought to his attention regarding any Sudbury restaurant.

"It’s not first time an insect has been found in food ... it does happen," he said. "It's unfortunate when it does happen. But most of Sudbury (restaurants are) excellent. It's infrequent that we have these complaints."

A person who answered the phone at Lavender refused comment.

Leupold said anyone who experiences something similar should contact the health department.

"We want to make there is not an insect infestation," he said.

Leupold told the resident he visited Lavender on July 8 but did not find an infestation.

"I'm glad he responded so quickly and checked it out," the resident said. "I still think a refund is in order if you deliver food with a bug in it!"
