'Bottleneck Relief Trial' Altering I-90/I-95 Interchange Next Week
Sudbury commuters will need to be aware of changes coming to the I-90/I-95 interchange in Weston next week.

The bottleneck that is the I-95/I-90 interchange in Weston has drawn the attention of MassDOT officials.
Next Wednesday, July 17, a two-week "bottleneck relief trial" period will begin in an effort to inexpensively alleviate the issues at the interchange.
According to a press release, "The bottleneck builds as traffic from I-90 and Route 30 merge onto I-95 northbound. To address this bottleneck, MassDOT will be closing the right lane on I-95 Northbound through a temporary tapered lane closure, just north of the I-95 northbound exit 23-24-25.
The right lane will, therefore, become a dedicated lane for Mass Pike and Route 30 travelers to merge onto I-95 northbound.
Currently, I-95 northbound is four lanes of through traffic, with the right-most lane also serving as the merge lane for drivers from Route 30 and the Mass Pike.
"This double-merge point causes traffic to back up through the Toll Plaza and onto I-90," the release states.
While the change is initially temporary, if effective it could become a permanent pattern.
Drivers will see barrels, cones and message signs directing them through the lane merge. The MassDOT release recommends that I-95 through traffic stay in the left-hand lanes during the trial.
