3. MEET STATE SEN. ELDRIDGE: All residents from the Middlesex and Worcester District are welcome to attend at town hall meeting today to meet State Sen. Jamie Eldridge.

The Westborough Town Hall meeting will be today from 6:30-8 pm at Tatnuck Booksellers, 18 Lyman Street.

4. WHAT TO CELEBRATE TODAY: Today is National Fruitcake Day. It is very appropriate for National Fruitcake Day to be celebrated shortly after Christmas. Once the holidays are over, it's time to get rid of your fruitcake. Giving a fruitcake is a Christmas tradition for many. It is also believed that recipients will re-wrap the fruitcake and give it to someone else. Who knows how many years, or decades, a fruitcake has been passed along? Ultimately, the trick is to make sure you give away the fruitcake before the holiday season is through. Otherwise, you get the joy of storing it, until the next fruitcake-giving season.

5. THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 1947 - 1st "Howdy Doody Show," (Puppet Playhouse), telecast on NBC; 1981 - Oiler Wayne Gretzky becomes fastest NHL player to get 100 pts (38th game); 1983 - Pope John Paul II pardons man who shot him (Mehmet Ali Agca); 1987 - Steve Largent sets all-time NFL record for career catches when he catches his 752nd pass; 1991 - "Carol Burnett Show" last airs on CBS-TV.
