Sudbury Resident Begins Peace Corps Service in Senegal

Emily Mepham begins training on March 5.

Emily Mepham will be abroad for a while and for good reason.

The 22-year-old Sudbury resident was recently accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Senegal on March 5, where she will train as a health education volunteer.

During the first three months of her service, Mepham will live with a host family in Senegal to become fully immersed in the country’s language and culture. After learning the language and cultural skills that will help her serve the community, Mepham will be sworn into service and be assigned to a community in Senegal, where she will live and work for two years with the local people.

Mepham is the daughter of William and Margaret Mephem and a graduate of Lincoln Sudbury High School in Sudbury, Mass. She then attended Brown University in Providence, R.I., where she earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors in gender studies in 2012.

Mepham previously received the Helen Terry Macleod Research grant for her thesis work on postpartum depression.

She is one of 286 Massachusetts residents currently serving in the Peace Corps.

Emily. You are an inspiration. You will serve as a great ambassador. I wish you well.

Kennedy had proposed that there be 100,000 per year. If only that had happened, the US would have a lot more people with a better understanding of the world, which probably would have translated into a far smarter foreign policy. If only...
