Sanctuary and Solace: A Social Justice Discussion at Congregation Beth El

Congregation Beth El of Sudbury has a long history of activism and social justice which it is celebrating as part of its 50th anniversary Jubilee year. On December 7, the focus will be on remembering the social justice accomplishments of the past and discussing the needs of the future. Join us on Friday, December 7 at 6:00 for Shabbat services followed by a potluck dinner at 7:00 and a panel discussion on “Sanctuary and Solace “at 8:00.

Jane Brauer and Linda Glass, who were both very involved in some of Beth El’s earlier social justice programs, will provide insight into the challenges faced and the unexpected lessons learned during the tremendous programs Beth El championed such as the outreach to Vietnamese Boat People in the 70’s and to Soviet Jewry and El Salvadoran refugees in the 80’s.

The discussion will then move to the needs of the future and current opportunities for providing sanctuary or solace. We will hear from 3 panelists: Diego Lowe (Director, MetroWest Workers Center), Rebecca Center (Under the Same Moon), and Steve Gutherz (local Immigration Attorney). They will give their perspectives on critical questions, sharing what problems inspired them and how they first got involved in their areas of social justice.  The ultimate goal of this series, “Been There. Done Much. Now What?”, which will continue on Jan. 18, March 8, and April 26, is to outline new ways for Beth El, as a community or as individuals, to rekindle the flame of Social Justice.
