Learn About Hunger in Our Communities

“Hunger in Our Communities”

Special guest speaker, Senator Jamie Eldridge
Hosted by the Presbyterian Church in Sudbury

A compelling movie, A Place at the Table, starring Jeff Bridges will be the centerpiece of a weekend of events at the Presbyterian Church in Sudbury focusing on hunger in our community. 50 million Americans – 1 in 4 children – don’t know where their next meal is coming from. A Place at the Table tells the powerful stories of three such Americans, who maintain their dignity even as they struggle just to eat. A Place at the Table shows how the issue could be solved forever, once the American public decides, as they have in the past, that ending hunger is in the best interests of all of us.

State Senator Jamie Eldridge, a forceful advocate for ending hunger in our communities, will introduce the film and will share his understand of the growing seriousness of the problem locally. The film tells us that the average food stamp recipient must live on just $3 a day. Sen. Eldridge can speak directly to this experience as he has regularly spent extended periods living under regional food stamp rations to better understand the decisions people must make.

Bridges, who is also Founder of the End Hunger Network, says,” If another nation was doing this to our children, we’d be at war.” See <http://www.magpictures.com/aplaceatthetable/>.
A Place at the Table will be shown at shown at the Presbyterian Church in Sudbury (PCIS) on Friday, October 18th at 6:30pm. *See full flyer here.

The community is encouraged to see this film and participate in the related events of the weekend including a food drive to benefit the Sudbury Community Food Pantry and the Parmenter Food Bank. In addition to cans and boxes of food, financial donations and cleaning supplies, diapers, paper goods and hygiene items such as soaps, dental supplies, etc. are much needed.

On Sunday, October 20th the PCIS High School and Middle School Youth Groups will be leading the congregation at the CROP Hunger Walk in Concord. For information see <www.concordcrop.org>. To learn how to join in the Walk contact Matt Crane at mh.crane@yahoo.com.
