John
Underwood, director and researcher for the American Athletic Institute, will
provide the L-S athletic community with an informative presentation.  John is a former NCAA All-American,
International-level distance runner and World Masters Champion.  John has coached or advised more than
two dozen Olympians including World and Olympic Champions.  He holds three International Olympic
Solidarity diplomas for coaching.
John has worked with nearly all sport federations including the NCAA,
NHL, NBA, NFL, the U.S. Olympic Committee, Sport Canada and the International
Olympic Committee.  As well, he is
the human performance consultant to the U.S. Navy SEALS.  The Life of an Athlete (LOA) program
provides a targeted opportunity to educate L-S stakeholders on valuable
prevention data, strategies, and educational tools to address the concerns young
adults face during their high-risk teen years.    And, the
research will show that athletic performance is impacted by substance use.

LOA
is a systematic community approach to (1) reducing risk and (2) increasing
protective factors in student athletes while (3) setting clear consistent
boundaries for behavior, (4) increasing consequence beliefs, (5) teaching
appropriate athlete lifestyle and (6) establishing a process to identify and
help those involved in substance use or behaviors of concern.

L-S
has been working toward these efforts with initiatives such as SADD (students
against destructive decisions);  Connections; athletic program student surveys; presentations;
code of conduct; and assessment by the Freedom From Chemical Dependency
(FCD).   As well, the L-S
Wellness curriculum teaches decision making/refusal skills and other pertinent
substance use information.   Some Wellness teachers have even used
the LOA slideshow in classes.

Our
hope is that this presentation will support our overall efforts to educate all
stakeholders, and galvanize support for this vital mission.
