Local Luminaries Presents Christina Agapakis, Ph.D.

The Friends of the Goodnow Library Local Luminaries series continues on March 9, 2014 at 3:00 p.m.,
with Christina Agapakis, Ph.D.
presenting a short talk titled "Culture: Living with Bacteria."
Bacteria are everywhere, in our
bodies, in our food, and in our environment. Our relationship to these microbes
is rapidly changing as we learn more about the science of the microbiome—the
trillions of bacteria on our skin and in our gut that help keep us healthy. How
will we live with microbes in the future?

In this talk for a
non-technical audience, Dr. Agapakis will discuss some of the art, science, and
technology of microbiology that is helping us see microbes in new

ways. After graduating from LS and eventually receiving her PhD from
Harvard in bioengineering, she is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in
the department of molecular, cell, and developmental biology at UCLA, an
adjunct professor of media design practices at Art Center College of Design,
and a writer for the Scientific American blog network. She was a 2012 L'Oreal
USA For Women in Science Fellow and was recently selected for Forbes Magazine
30 under 30 in Science and Healthcare.
