Local Luminaries Series at Goodnow Library Honors Greek Culture
The Friends of the Goodnow Library Local Luminaries series continues on March 2, 2014 at 3:00
p.m. This program will feature
fascinating conversations on the rich cultural heritage of Greece as experienced by two local families. The first speaker is Sara Cohen, an artist, art educator in the Boston school system,
and a video documentary producer. A
Greek Jewish woman born in Athens to parents who survived the Holocaust, Sara
has created and produced two documentaries about her culture, sharing survival
stories of her relatives in their Jewish neighborhood in Greece. The second portion of the program will engage
us with the story of Dimitris Spiliakos, an attorney from
Thessaloniki, Greece who, throughout the course of World War II, helped several
Jewish families escape to Athens and arranged for continued assistance that
kept them safe during the German occupation. His grandson and namesake,
Dimitris Spiliakos, will present this heroic and inspiring tale.
