Black Swallow-wort Control near the Sudbury River

Only two people are scheduled for this date. The need is great! Please consider helping.

SWEET, Inc. is trying to reduce the spread of a very large population of an invasive plant called, Black Swallow-wort. This is a milkweed relative which is mistaken by Monarchs as common milkweed and lay eggs on them. But resulting larvae cannot ingest the toxin in Black Swallow-wort and die. You can help one of our most important pollinators by helping to remove the vines with pods before they dry. Black Swallow-wort pods are full of parachuting seeds. There are many thousands of plants in this area which borders Wayland and Lincoln in north Sudbury.

There are very few people who have decided to help over summer and due to this, this date has been added in the hope someone will decide to help. Two people just dropped out because of scheduling conflicts. That leaves two people for this date.

Additional plants were found on Water Row Road on the southern-most side by the Route 27 bridge. Seed is being carried by vehicles. If we do not finish, more plants will establish.

Students from areas high schools can earn service hours helping with SWEET, Inc. projects. We are an approved 501 C-3 public charity made up of volunteers. Contact the group at sweetinvasives@gmail.com or message on public Facebook page www.facebook.com/sweetincsudburyma
