The Sudbury Historical Society Presents: RAILROADS THROUGH SUDBURY

Continuing with its celebration of Sudbury’s 375th

Anniversary, on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the Town Hall, The

Sudbury Historical Society will present a talk entitled Railroads Through

Sudbury. Three railroad enthusiasts will show how and where the trains came

through Sudbury and the building and closing of the stations and waiting rooms.

Sudbury resident Dick Williamson will introduce Henry

Keutmann and Bill Davies. Keutmann will speak about the Mass. Central Railroad

and Davies will speak about the Framingham-Lowell Railroad. Both railroads travelled

through the South Sudbury Station on Union Avenue which was the most well-known

station built around 1887 and considered a showpiece in its day.

Among the

images to be shown are photographs for the station and waiting rooms in

Sudbury, the South Sudbury Railroad on Union Avenue, the East Sudbury waiting

room on Landham Road, the Wayside Inn waiting room on Dutton Road, the Sudbury

Center Station and the waiting room that replaced it, the North Sudbury Waiting

Room, the existing Freight House on Peakham Road, and the still extant Section

House opposite Lotus Blossom Restaurant on Route 20. Also on view will be

pictures of a train that crashed into a truck and derailed near Union Avenue

and the last train to run through Sudbury, and items from the Sudbury

Historical Society’s railroad collection.

We hope that anyone who has memories of these buildings and

the railroads themselves will attend and tell their stories.

The program is free to all. Donations are welcome.

Refreshments will follow the program. Bring your friends.
