The Sudbury Historical Society Presents: The King Philip War in Sudbury

Town Historian and Sudbury Historical Society
Curator, Lee Swanson will present this exciting program. English settlers knew Metacomet, a grand

sachem of the Wampanoag tribe, as King Philip. On April 21, 1676, he and over
1,000 of his warriors attacked Sudbury. The
most intense attacks were on the Haynes Garrison House on present day Water
Row. These attacks followed the burning of towns west of Sudbury. Militia from
Sudbury and the Boston area, lead by Capt. Samuel Wadsworth, led the defensive
against Metacomet. He and the soldiers who died in this battle are buried under
the obelisk monument in Wadsworth Cemetery, which bears his name. You will also
hear the story of Mary Rowlandson, a Lancaster woman who was captured by the
Native Americans during King Philip’s War in 1675.

This program is part of the Sudbury’s 375th
Anniversary Celebration.

Refreshments will follow the program. Sudbury Historical Society Publications and other items will be
on display and for sale after the event. The program is free to all. Donations are welcome.
