Feel-Good Story of the Year: Sudbury's Own Takes Over PD

Scott Nix has been the town's chief of police since July 11.

What started out as a low point for the Sudbury Police Department ended as one of its proudest moments in 2013.

After the abrupt resignation of former Police Chief Richard Glavin due to an arrest in his hometown of Tyngsboro on multiple charges, the town quickly appointed Lt. Scott Nix, a lifelong resident of Sudbury, as its interim chief, and soon after as its permanent chief, effective July 11.

"Chief Nix's many years of experience with the Sudbury Police Department, and the leadership he provided while serving as Interim Chief, make him an ideal candidate for the job," said Valente in a release. “He was a finalist for the position in 2009, and as the Executive Officer for the Department since then, has continuously developed his leadership and management skills. He is extremely qualified to lead the Department into the future.  He will continue the tradition of outstanding public service from the Sudbury Police Department, and I am confident the Department will continue the standard of excellence and professionalism we have been fortunate to experience here in Sudbury.”

Nix was humbled at the promotion.

"I’m not really a title person, it’s more of the opportunity to do the right thing," Nix told Sudbury Patch. "Hopefully I can move the department forward, move the town forward, create safety for kids and see what we can accomplish."

Nix has risen through the ranks with distinction. He started as a police dispatcher in November 1993 and has grown with the department, becoming a patrolman in April 1996 and has since received several promotions:

  • Detective in 2001;
  • Sergeant in 2002;
  • Lieutenant 2004.
In March of 2009, he also assumed the role of executive officer along with his duties of detective lieutenant until becoming the town's chief of police.

"I think one of the benefits I’ve had is I’ve been in every position," he said. "One of my pet peeves is don’t forget where you came from."

Nix has a Masters in Criminal Justice Administration from Western New England College where he also received his Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1991 to 1997 and received several military awards, including:

  • Navy Achievement Medal;
  • Meritorious Unit Citation;
  • National Defense Medal;
  • Good Conduct Medal Meritorious Mast;
  • Letter of Appreciation.
He received an honorable discharge at the rank of staff sergeant and was a communications specialist and platoon sergeant.

Nix was sworn in as chief on July 30.
