Pelham Island Road Bridge Closing Wednesday

After months of planning, the bridge will close for replacement on Wednesday.

The bridge over the Sudbury River on Pelham Island Road will be closed to through traffic on Wednesday to allow for a replacement bridge to be constructed.

Prepartory work began in February as crews constructed temporary structures to carry utilities over the river during construction. The bridge was originally scheduled to close in late February, but delays in the utility construction project led to the delay in closing the bridge.

According to Pelham Island resident Gary Slep, who has been providing updates about the construction, contractors still expect to reopen the bridge in November, before the snow and ice season.

While the bridge is closed access to Pelham Island will occur via Landham Road in Sudbury. In addition, emergency response officials in Wayland have worked with Sudbury emergency responders to provide police and fire coverage should it be necessary.

The one-lane bridge that is being replaced was constructed as a temporary bridge, but has been in place for many years. The new bridge is designed to feature two, 10.5-foot lanes as well as a sidewalk.
