Sudbury CRANE (Community Resource Awareness Network) and the Sudbury Police Department to Host Drug Disposal Event

On Saturday, October 26, 2013, from 10AM to 2 PM, Sudbury CRANE (Community Resource Awareness Network) and the Sudbury Police Department will host a Drug Disposal event at the Sudbury Department of Public Works building located at 275 Old Lancaster Road in Sudbury. This is an opportunity for residents to dispose of unwanted and expired drugs in a responsible manner.

Residents may bring prescription drugs, controlled substances, over the counter drugs, herbal remedies, vitamins, and pet medications for disposal. The drugs may be placed in sealed plastic bags or plastic containers and do not have to be in their original containers.  Sudbury CRANE volunteers will accept the drugs, and police will be on site to secure the drugs and ensure proper disposal.

This event is very important because among young people ages 12-17, prescription drugs have become the second most abused illegal drug behind marijuana. Teens ages 12- 17 have the highest annual rates of prescription drug abuse after young adults (18-25).  Every day 2500 teenagers use a prescription drug to get high for the first time. Most teens say it is easy to get prescription drugs at home.

Sudbury Community Resource Awareness Network (CRANE) compiles the lists of youth and family support services in the Sudbury and Lincoln communities into one collaborative structure that communicates them effectively so that local families and professionals will have one place to access the wide array of services offered. By creating this network, CRANE strives to provide easier access to services, better coordination between programs, and greater awareness of these important issues. CRANE also hosts community events like the Drug Disposal Program to assist our communities in dealing with issues facing youth and their families.

CRANE was established by the following organizations: Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School, LSRHS Connections, Lincoln Public Schools (K-8), Sudbury Public Schools (K-8), Lincoln Police Department, Sudbury Police Department, Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department, Sudbury Parks and Recreation Department, Lincoln Interfaith Council, Sudbury Clergy Association, and the Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable.

CRANE encourages participation from a broad range of organizations that provide youth and family services to the Sudbury and Lincoln communities, so please contact us about joining.
