More than 30 people who were arrested on drug charges following an undercover investigation led by Marlborough Police were arraigned Thursday. The diverse group of people faces criminal charges ranging from single misdemeanors to multiple felonies.

The hearings in District Court spanned more than four hours, providing a picture of the impact of illegal drugs circulating through greater Marlborough. The defendants ranged in age from 18 to 51, and included parents of small children, employees of local businesses, and people who their attorneys said were seeking treatment for addiction.

Prosecutors, by contrast, described defendants with multiple prior arrests or convictions for drugs and violent crimes, and advocated for cash bail amounts up to $15,000 for people who they said were targets of the investigation.

District Judge David Locke presided Thursday. The arrests followed a three-month investigation that included Marlborough, Hudson and Sudbury Police, the Central Middlesex Area Criminal Task Force, and the federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

In a release, Marlborough Police said the investigation used an undercover officer to infiltrate an organized group involved in heroin distribution in the Framingham, Marlborough and Hudson area.

Two people were charged with 19 or more drug offenses each.

Elizabeth S. Danforth, 44, of 22 High St., Hudson, was arraigned on 19 charges, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office. Locke set bail at $5,000 cash. The charges were: possession of a Class B controlled substance (Ritalin), distribution of a Class B controlled substance (Ritalin), possession of a Class B controlled substance (Oxycodone), distribution of a Class B controlled substance (Oxycodone), possession of a Class A controlled substance (heroin), distribution of a Class A controlled substance (heroin), possession of a Class E controlled substance (Xanax), distribution of a controlled substance (Xanax), possession of a Class C controlled substance (Hydrocodone), distribution of a Class C controlled substance (Hydrocodone), attempting to commit a crime, intimidation of a witness, threatening to commit a crime, larceny under $250, and five counts of conspiracy to violate the drug law.

Paul T. O'Brien, 51, of 382 Lincoln St., Apt. 2R, Marlborough, was charged with 27 drug offenses, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's office. Locke set bail at $5,000 cash. The charges were: 10 counts of conspiracy to violate the drug law, seven counts of possession of a Class A controlled substance, subsequent offense, seven counts of distribution of a Class A controlled substance (heroin), subsequent offense, two counts of distribution of a Class B controlled substance (cocaine), subsequent offense, and one count of possession of a Class B controlled substance (cocaine), subsequent offense.

The accused filled the benches at Marlborough District Court Thursday, waiting their turn. Family members waited too. At times, the audience members reacted visibly to the initial bail decisions made by Locke. When he ordered one defendant to serve the remainder of a 30-day jail term, because his arrest on a marijuana distribution charge had violated his probation, one young man stormed out of the courtroom, swearing.

"Ten … dollars?" he said, a reference to the estimated street value of the marijuana.
