Sudbury Police Investigating Shooting Incident

The following information was supplied by the Sudbury Police Department. Where arrests are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The was contacted by Emerson Hospital early Tuesday morning regarding a possible gunshot victim who was being treated at the Concord-based facility.

According to a press release by Lt. Scott Nix, a female victim reported the incident involved a pellet gun.

"A Sudbury officer responded to Emerson in an attempt to gather further information surrounding the circumstances," Nix said in the release. "The victim was uncooperative in providing details surrounding the events resulting in her sustaining the wound or where the incident transpired. Stating it was an accident, people make mistakes and she was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Attempts to speak with her boyfriend, who accompanied her to the hospital, were met with the same uncooperative stance.

The victim was transferred to Lahey Clinic in Burlington, where police learned she suffered a broken rib and a projectile lodged in a lung.

"Further attempts were made by detectives to speak with the victim and boyfriend, but both continued to not cooperate," Nix said in the release. "Detectives attempted to gain additional information from Lahey Clinic but HIPAA regulations were cited. Detectives tried to explain we were exempt from HIPAA regulations given we were conducting an active criminal investigation but their counsel disagreed."

The incident remains under investigation.
