Improvements Upcoming for Historic Sudbury Town Centre

According to the Town of Sudbury website, construction will begin this summer.

After nearly a decade of discussion and planning, construction will begin this summer on the intersection at historic Sudbury Town Centre in an effort to make the area more modern and safe.

The Board of Selectmen began the Sudbury Centre Improvement Advisory Committee in 2005, according to the town website, and since that time the group has met for things like plan review, research of historically appropriate features, consensus building, and soliciting public input.

Most recently, in 2013 voters approved funding of the Town Center intersection project at Annual Town Meeting, and as a result town officials have been finalizing engineering plans that this spring will go out to bid.

Thanks to money approved in 2007 at Annual Town Meeting, the town worked with an engineering firm in the construction design and engineering portion of the project.

Based on those discussions, plans were established to property align the north and south as well as the east and west roads, which will make the intersection safer, according to the town website.

To do so, modern traffic lights will be installed and other changes will be made that town officials believe will make for better pedestrian use, stormwater management and historic preservation.

"Most recently the stone wall relocation portion of the project was approved by both the Planning Board and the Historic Districts Commission in early April of 2014," the town said. "The wall relocation is being completed by Sudbury DPW."

Once the overall project goes out to bid this spring, a construction firm will be selected and construction will likely begin this summer. The town predicts the project will be completed in 2015.
