Step 1: Figure out what goal you’d like to achieve - for example, weight loss.

Step 2: Find out how you want to achieve it - for example, exercise more, eat healthier.

Step 3: Use the third-person perspective - visualize yourself as others would see you.

See oneself as the type of person who would engage in one's desired behaviors can help you increase motivation and improve the likelihood of following through with behavior.

For now, figure out one thing that you would like to use the third-person perspective technique on.

In a study conducted by Lisa Libby and her colleagues from Ohio State University, researchers asked participants to picture themselves and use either the first-person or the third-person perspective when they were supposed to vote in the US presidential election.  In other words, researchers asked one group to imagine seeing themselves through their own set of eyes while the second group was instructed to see themselves as someone else would see them when they went to vote

What were the results? Those who imagined themselves from the third-person perspective more often visited the polls when  compared to those who imagined themselves in the first person (90% vs. 72%).

In this study they authors concluded that "actions are perceived to be more a function of the actor’s character when viewed from an observer’s perspective than when viewed from the actor’s perspective."

Visualize yourself going through the process of the goals you want to achieve. This process will enable you to perform each better, and it can help you better prepare yourself to reach you goal faster.

Will you use losing weight or exercise more?
