Lincoln-Sudbury Students Travel to Build Homes for Less Fortunate

Students traveled to New Orleans for an alternate spring break with Habitat for Humanity.

It may have been spring break. But a group of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School students were hard at work.

Ten students and two chaperones traveled to New Orleans last week as a part of alternate spring break with Habit for Humanity.

During the trip, students built houses in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. It was the eighth year that students from the school have visited the city as a part of the Katrina Project club formed at Lincoln-Sudbury.

Students slept in a Baptist church in New Orleans during the trip, spending nights in bunk beds.

Lynne Hunter and Shoshi Kahn-Woods helped make the trip possible by securing the sleeping arrangements, ordering plane tickets and setting up fundraisers to reduce the cost for students.

LSRHS science teachers Charli Asta-Ferrero and Tom Danko were the chaperones on the trip.

During this year’s trip, students worked on three homes. During their time in New Orleans, participants shingled a roof, built the frame on another and laid the foundation for the third house.

Several of the students who made the trip were doing so for a second year. While in New Orleans, they visited a home they worked on last year. The property was completed and a family lives inside of it, which the school said gave those students a strong sense of accomplishment.

In their free time, students enjoyed French Quarter meals and also attended the first day of Jazz Fest.
