Police Chief Scott Nix Clarifies Plans for School Security

Though donated equipment would allow police to tap into live video at Sudbury schools, there is no plan for the district to do so at the current time.

Last week, the Boston Globe reported about the plans Sudbury Public Schools has to make changes in school security thanks to the work of Michele Gay, who moved to town shortly after her daughter was killed in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

NaviGate Prepared donated about $20,000 in equipment to Sudbury Public Schools in Gay's honor, and The Globe reported that among the tasks that could be accomplished with the equipment is live video feed being sent to the Sudbury Police Department.

Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix wanted to clarify this week, however, that though the NaviGate Prepared set up would give the ability for police to tap into live video, the district does not currently have plans to do so for the time being.

Nix said that Sudbury Public Schools do not have cameras to access with the exception of the cameras used with the security buzzing system. Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School does have cameras, but police are not currently planning to connect with them.

"School administration and I are very much aware implementing such a change needs to be clearly examined and explained prior to doing so," Nix said.
