Sudbury Residents Graduate From Nashoba Brooks School

President of the Board of Trustees John McClellan and Head of School Danielle Heard addressed the Class of 2014 at Nashoba Brooks School graduation on June 5, and asked graduates to challenge their thinking, suspend their disbelief, and appreciate the value of the single-sex education they’ve experienced.

“Our graduates are six times more likely to major in math, science, or technology, and three times more likely to consider careers in engineering,” Heard said, citing research by UCLA and Stanford University, among others. “Seventy-five percent of girls’ school graduates consider college a steppingstone to grad school, and are statistically twice as likely to earn a doctoral degree.”

The Class of 2014 had a big year. Students won awards in C-SPAN’s StudentCam competition, broke athletic records, and on a field trip to Washington, D.C., they wouldn’t settle for softball questions, and personally asked Chief Justice John Roberts “Do you think the constitution should be interpreted as a ‘living document’ that needs to be adapted to fit the times or as something that needs to be strictly adhered to?”

“Outside of Nashoba Brooks, some people might question whether middle school students can truly make a difference in this world,” Heard said. “Any such non-believers have not met the Nashoba Brooks Class of 2014.”

Heard highlighted graduates’ extensive work in service learning over the course of the year. Students worked with Heading Home to organize efforts to assist a homeless family in regaining stability and hope with your help moving into a fully furnished and outfitted apartment, and helped children obtain the essentials that they need for the healthy foundation of childhood through your volunteer work with Cradles to Crayons.  They also collected canned goods for Open Table and volunteered at Nashoba Learning Group.

“Here at Nashoba Books,” Heard said. “It takes very little to suspend short-sighted disbelief.  We believe that you can, and we know that you will, continue to change this world for the better.”

Nashoba Brooks School is a coed Lower School for preschool to Grade 3, and an all-girls Middle School for Grades 4-8, in Concord, Massachusetts. The school educates children for a life of continuous learning, accomplishment, and leadership in a diverse and changing world. The school nurtures students’ talents and character, while fostering the development of each child’s personal excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts.
