Assabet U10 Reds Capture State Championship in New England Girls Hockey League

The Assabet U10 Reds, a girls’ hockey team comprised of 9 to 11 year old players, ended their amazing, magical, undefeated season with a 2-0 victory over the Boston Junior Eagles, March 9, 2014, to win the U10 State Championship Title for Massachusetts Tier 1 Girls Hockey of the New England Girls Hockey League (NEGHL). In an earlier morning game, Assabet shut out the North Shore Vipers, 4-0, to advance to the championship. The games were played at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough.

With three minutes left in the game, Kara Goulding scored what turned out to be the winning goal, giving Assabet a slim, 1-0 lead. Teammate Sophie Ensley, of Sudbury, picked up the assist. Avery McKinney scored a minute later, adding an insurance goal to seal the championship for Assabet.

Assabet finished its perfect season with a 25-0-7 record, recording five consecutive victories in post-season play. The team scored a total of 149 goals and allowed only 25 in 32 regular and post-season games. Assabets' opponents were the Bay State Breakers, the North Shore Vipers, the East Coast Wizards, the Massachusetts Spitfires, and their championship game opponent Eagles. Team chemistry, solid teamwork, and the dedication of coaches and supportive parents paved the road for Assabet’s incredible accomplishments.
