Heat Doesn't Deter Sudbury Residents from Enjoying Truck Day

The Goodnow Library sponsored an event in their parking lot in cooperation with the army reserve, fire and police department and public works.

Despite the temperatures, roughly 600 residents came to enjoy Truck Day, sponsored by the Goodnow Library.

According to library director Esme Green, she really wanted to create a festival-like atmosphere. Children of all ages could climb into fire trucks, hop on a police motorcycle, climb into a big yellow tractor or plow, or take a look inside a Humvee from the army reserve. They could also jump in a train with their parents for a ride around the block.

To stave off the heat, however, iced tea was available in addition to an ice cream truck for a quick treat before getting back to exploring the larger-than-life trucks around them.

“It’s a great community event, it’s great to see everybody here,” she said. Green said the event is put on with the cooperation of several of the town’s departments, including the police, fire, and public works. What was new this year, however, was the presence of the army reserve, service dogs, and a train children could board for a ride around the block.

“The kids just really love it,” Green said. The library is celebrating 150 years, so Green said she wanted to pull out all the stops for Truck Day this year.

Nora Herrin, of Sudbury, brought her son Tate simply because he loves trucks.

“I’m not sure I’m going to be able to get him to leave,” she joked. “This is our first year coming here, and it’s great. He loves it.”

Sudbury resident Cate Blake said bringing her son every year is “a little tradition.” Blake said her son is very interested in trucks, and can even name all of them.

“As soon as we got here, he was going, ‘that’s a school bus, that’s a plow, that’s a tractor!’” she said.

Candice Root, of Concord, brought both her sons to the event. “It’s great for them to imagine what it’s like to be inside these big trucks,” she said. “It’s magical for them.”
