Sudbury Family Among Volunteers Helping Provide Birthday Parties for Homeless Children

This weekend is the annual Cakewalk, which takes place in West Roxbury.

Birthdays are meant to be among the happiest times of a child's year. And one organization aims to make that the case for as many children as possible, even if their family may not have the means to organize a birthday party.

Birthday Wishes is an organization founded in 2002 in Newton, designed to provide birthday parties for homeless children.

Last year alone, the group helped 20,000 children celebrate their birthday.

Among the volunteers for the organization is a Sudbury family. Kristen Tahirak has been involved with Birthday Wishes for about a year, along with her husband and two daughters.

This year, Tahirak was named neighborhood ambassador in Sudbury, tasked with encouraging families to participate and raise money for the cause by participating in the annual Cakewalk fundraiser. Fellow Sudbury resident Dennell Nuese has been working closely with Tahirak to spread the word about the organization.

In order to help support Birthday Wishes, the Sudbury Family Network and LEAP school have organized events this year.

This Sunday at 7:45 a.m. in West Roxbury's Millennium Park, the main fundraising event for Birthday Wishes is scheduled to take place.

Cakewalk is an annual event and celebration that allows fundraisers to walk as individuals or teams. For more information on the event, visit the Cakewalk website.
