LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Sudbury Plays the Numbers Game

Resident Dan De Pompei says Article 4 of this year's Warrant is an example of how the town is run.

On April 15 we all received copies of the Warrant for Town Meeting (TM) 2012.  The distribution of the Warrant prior to TM is required by statute so the taxpayers can be informed on the status of the Town prior to the taxpayers carrying out their legislative responsibilities at TM.  Article 4 of this year’s Warrant, The FY 13 Budget, is really the major purpose of the Warrant and TM.  Article 4 sets the Cost Center expenditures and thereby sets the tax levy to fund the Town Cost Center operating budgets for the next fiscal year.  The budget numbers in Article 4 and the integrity behind these numbers is a validation of how the Town is run. This year, when TM moved on Article 4, the Finance Committee (FINCOM) amended Article 4 and advised …

I agree Siobhan. The problem is that Mr Fucci seems to condone "opinion based" attacks such as Carol's and yet will not allow people to state facts that effect WE the voters, citizens and taxpayers of Sudbury. I have recently made posts in regard to one of our elected lawmakers and they have been denied. My posts are based on public records which can be found at any courthouse or website of the …   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: House Passes FY13 Budget

State Rep. Tom Conroy explains propostions to increase local aid funding.

Two weeks ago, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed a FY13 budget proposal that returns to cities and towns much of the increased state revenues that have been generated by a stronger state economy. Later this month, the State Senate will pass its version of the budget, and the after the two legislative versions are reconciled in June, a final budget will be sent to the Governor for his signature, likely before the start of the FY13 on July 1. Each year, my top priority has been to increase local aid to the communities that I am proud to represent, and this year my colleagues and I in the House proposed to increase local aid funding in several ways to help lessen the burden of the recession on municipalities: We also level-…

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Sudbury Community Food Pantry Food Drive This Saturday

Pat Mullen asks the community to spread the word as there won't be a reminder in mailboxes this week.

Saturday, May 12, is the day for the most important and largest single food drive for the Sudbury Community Food Pantry. The Sudbury Post Office will again participate in a nationwide food drive on Saturday, May 12. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) last year collected over 75,000,000 pounds of food.  On Saturday, May 12, all Sudbury families are requested to place their donation of food and/or personal care products at their mailbox before their mail delivery. Local mail carriers have volunteered to collect the contributions as they deliver the mail. The items will then be delivered to the Sudbury Community Food Pantry for distribution to needy families throughout the area. Suggested items include: canned fruit, canned …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Siena Farms Supports Preservation of Pantry Brook Farm

Resident and farm owner Chris Kurth urges residents to attend and vote at Annual Town Meeting.

As a Sudbury native and farmer/owner of Siena Farms, a 50-acre vegetable farm here in North Sudbury, I am writing to passionately encourage every voting town resident to come to Town Meeting next week to raise their hand in support of the permanent preservation of Pantry Brook Farm (Article 30).  Preserving farmland preserves – and creates – farming. Indeed, there would be no Siena Farms if not for the devoted work of the Sudbury community over the last half-century in preserving some of its most productive farmland, as the majority of our annual cropping occurs on protected farmland here in Sudbury.  As a result, we are able to grow fresh organic food to serve a 500-member CSA community, as well as area farmers’ markets and restaurants, …

I'm not quite understanding why this would equate to subsidizing farmers. This is Open Space--Green Space--being beneficially used by local citizens for the, pardon the pun, grass roots farming initiative. The land is not being developed into commercial or industrial space not is it falling pray to large scale homes or worse. Sudbury needs more of this type of activity. I just don't see any …   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Don't Allow Polling Hours to be Cut

League of Women Voters asks customers to vote at the Sudbury Water District's annual meeting on May 15.

The Sudbury League of Women Voters urges customers of the Sudbury Water District to attend the District’s annual meeting Tuesday, May 15, and vote against a proposal to cut the hours the polls are open in the District election from the current 12 hours to four hours. That proposal is Article 7 in the Water District’s annual meeting warrant, which is available online at www.suburywater.com  and at the Sudbury Senior Center, 40 Fairbank Road, and the Water District office, 199 Raymond Road. The District did not mail its annual report and warrant to its customers this year, and the postcard which informed them those documents are available failed to mention that the Water District election will be held May 15. The Sudbury Water District …
