LIVE BLOG: 2013 Annual Town Meeting Day 3

Funds to improve L-S softball field, Featherland and Davis fields approved.

Good evening and welcome to Day 3, the scheduled final day, of Sudbury's 2013 Annual Town Meeting. Tonight we begin with Article 28, which asks to amend a zoning bylaw on sheds. One article that may get a lot of buzz, pardon the pun, is No. 30, a temporary moratorium on medical marijuana treatment centers. Currently under the Zoning Bylaw, a medical marijuana treatment center is not a permitted use in the Town of Sudbury and any regulations promulgated by the State Department of Public Health are expected to provide guidance to the Town in regulating medical marijuana, including Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers. Numerous community preservation fund articles will follow that, until we get to Article 39, AMEND BYLAWS, ART. V, PUBLIC …

Jon999-- If I were EVER to see anyone drinking beer while shooting a firearm they would be kicked out of my club (or any club I know of) so fast their head would spin. If we were shooting casually I would let them know in no uncertain terms that what they were doing was absolutely unacceptable. Your head is full of shallow caricatures and unearned condescension. Firearms owners are probably the …   more ›

LIVE BLOG: 2013 Annual Town Meeting Day 2

First item for tonight is Article 16, construction of a new police station.

Good evening and welcome to Day 2 of Sudbury's 2013 Annual Town Meeting. Last night was relatively quiet as the town approved the FY14 budget. Resident Ralph Tyler made a few amendment requests to various articles, but none were approved. Tonight we'll start with what might be the most anticipated topic, Article 16, which discusses the construction of a new police station on Hudson Road near the Fire Department Headquarters. Numerous residents have pointed fingers at the Board of Selectmen regarding a possible by-law violation. Vice Chair Bob Haarde has been the lone voice to say it looks like a violation did occur. According to resident Andrew MacEntee, there was a late decision Monday night by the Selectmen to approve an amendment by …

So we can end up spending $650,000 and then have the full project voted down at town meeting next year. Scary if this is someone's idea of fiscal responsibility. Selectmen should be embarrassed.   more ›

We'll provide updates on the warrant articles throughout the night.

Annual Town Meeting begins tonight at 7:30 at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School and Sudbury Patch will once again live blog from the auditorium. This year there are 43 articles on the warrant, althought a couple were withdrawn recently. Among the most talked about articles of late is No. 16, construction of a new police station on Hudson Road. The Board of Selectmen agree the town needs one, as do many residents who have attended meetings the past couple of months. But there have been residents who have questioned whether the Board broke its own by-laws in decided to put the article on the warrant. "Does the project come under purview of (Capital Improvement Planning Committee)?" resident Andrew MacEntee asked during the April 23 …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: The Next Event

Dan De Pompei says Annual Town Meeting will be key this year to all Sudbury residents.

This past March 27 the residents of Sudbury voted, by a margin of 4 to 1, to increase our Board of  Selectmen (BOS) from 3 members to 5. This was a strong statement that we want more representation, more transparency, more discussion and a better opportunity to participate as individuals in our own governance.  The Special Town Election for these two additional Selectmen will be held June 25, 2013. This is not, however, the next significant event in creating a broader, more representative BOS. The next significant event is Town Meeting on May 6, 7 and 8, 2013. Regardless of how many Selectmen we have, the authority of the BOS is derived from Sudbury’s Home Rule Charter under Massachusetts General Laws (MGL).  The Charter and the MGL are …

Possible By-Law Violation May Put Police Station Proposal on Ice

Process and procedure of the plan has residents concerned.

The cost isn't an issue ... Sudbury residents seem to be OK with that. Neither is the design plan nor the new location. The one roadblock that may prevent a new police station from being built is fear of a possibly by-law violation the Board of Selectmen may have made. Article 16 of the 2013 Annual Town Meeting, to be held May 6-8, will ask residents to approve a plan for a new police station, to be located on Hudson Road near the Fire Department Headquarters. Resident Andy MacEntee said his concern with the plan involved its process and procedure. "Does the project come under purview of (Capital Improvement Planning Committee)?" he asked. The CIPC studies proposed capital projects and improvements involving major tangible assets and …
